Spartak Moscow must respect Celtic’s history as European champions and aggressive style of play or they will be punished in their Champions League tie in Moscow on Tuesday, Spartak coach Unai Emery said Monday.
Spartak’s last meeting with the 1967 European champions was five years ago, when Celtic won on penalties after a Champions League qualifying tie ended in a 2-2 aggregate stalemate.
“Celtic’s history compels you to respect that team. It won the European Cup in 1967, beating Inter,” Emery said.
“This is a team that’s only used to winning and displays a very intense and aggressive style in the process.”
“They instill that style into the young players in the team. We should be ready for that.”
Spartak lost their opening group stage game 3-2 to Barcelona after leading 2-1 with 20 minutes to go, and Emery said the defeat made the Celtic game even more important.
“This game’s very important, even more so after the loss in the first round of games,” he said.
“Now we’re playing at home and we’ll play to win.”
Former Valencia coach Emery took over at Spartak at the end of last season after leading the Spanish team to third in La Liga.
