A "stupid" foul and wastefulness in possession have left Spartak Moscow on the brink of a Champions league exit, midfielder Demy de Zeeuw said Tuesday.
Spartak were leading Celtic 2-1 at home Tuesday when Juan Manuel Insaurralde tripped Gary Hooper, earning himself a red card and sparking a Celtic comeback that saw the visitors win 3-2.
"In the second half, we started well, we scored a goal and then we make a stupid foul and we lose the game," de Zeeuw said.
"It happens too many times in Spartak that we get ten men and a red card and today Celtic did a good job."
Spartak would not have been at risk had they made better use of chances in the first-half, de Zeeuw suggested.
Bottom of Group G after two defeats, Spartak are now on the brink of leaving the competition and must beat Benfica away in their next game to keep their hopes alive.
"The next game we must win. If we don't win, I think the Champions League is finished," he said.
