Dallas Stars forward Tom Wandell has signed a lockout contract in Russia with Severstal Cherepovets, the KHL team said on its website.

The 25-year-old Swede had been linked with his native team Sodertalje SK, but opted for the fledgling Russian-based league.

"The Swedish forward Tom Wandall has signed a one-year contract with the Cherepovets team," the statement posted late Tuesday said.

Severstal is seventh in the KHL's Western Conference, posting five wins in its opening 11 games.

Last season the team reached the playoffs, but was eliminated in the first round by Atlant Moscow Region.

The Swedish center is the first lockout signing for the team, which leaves it the opportunity to sign two more NHL players under KHL rules.

Wandell left Sweden in 2008 for Dallas, where he has notching up 42 points in 211 games.
