World No. 1 Novak Djokovic breezed past Jurgen Melzer and into the semifinals of the China Open on Friday.
The Serbian, twice Beijing champion, took less than an hour to beat the 37tth-ranked Austrian 6-1, 6-2, and set up a semifinal with Germany's Florian Mayer.
Mayer, the world No. 29 Mayer, eliminated local wild card Zhang Ze 6-3, 6-4.
Meanwhile, third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had little trouble defeating Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-2 in another quarterfinal.
In the semifinal, the Frenchman will play Feliciano Lopez, who pulled out a comeback win against Sam Querrey of the United States 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In the women’s draw, reigning champion Agnieszka Radwanska was defeated by local star Li Na in straight sets.
Seventh seed Li showed aggressive tennis, scoring 32 winners against Radwanska’s nine to grab a 6-4, 6-2 victory, and goes on to face Russia’s Maria Sharapova in the semifinal.
France’s Marion Bartoli battled through her quarterfinal against Carla Suarez Navarro, ranked 46 in the world, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.
Ninth seed Bartoli will play world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the next round.
