An experienced skydiver has died after her parachute detached in a tragic accident in southern Russia, local authorities told RIA Novosti.

The 45-year-old woman, who has not been named, hit the ground at terminal velocity after a backpack malfunction during a training jump Sunday near the city of Krasnodar.

"The information that we have is that this is a tragic accident," said Oksana Beldinova, a spokeswoman for local investigators.

"The parachute came away, the canopy separately, the woman separately."

Beldinova said there had been a failure of the woman's automatic activation device, which was supposed to deploy the chute after three seconds of freefall.

"The athlete was experienced, it wasn't her first jump," she said.

The woman belonged to a Krasnodar skydiving club, Beldinova said.

It's the second death of a Russian skydiver this month after former world champion Irina Sinitsyina was killed in an accident in Perris Valley, California.

After colliding with another diver in mid-air, Sinitsyna got entangled in the parachute straps and was unable to open her reserve chute.

She was transferred to a Moscow clinic in critical condition but doctors were unable to save her.
