MOSCOW, November 25 (R-Sport) - Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov ended their five-year wait for a first Grand Prix title with victory in the pairs figure skating Sunday at the NHK Trophy in Sendai, Japan.

The Russian pair secured their place at next month’s Grand Prix Finals in Sochi, Russia, their first appearance at the season-ending event since 2010.

Bazarova and Larionov had led by just 0.47 points from the Canadian pair of Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch overnight, but put in a dazzling performance in Sunday’s free skate to set a total score of 192.02 that left the Canadians far behind on 180.63.

Moore-Towers and Moscovitch’s second places was good enough for them to scrape into the Grand Prix Finals.

The top three remained unchanged from the short program as Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir of the United States secured third with a total score of 174.51.

On Saturday, the Japanese crowd saw local winners in the men’s and women’s singles, with Yuzuru Hanyu taking victory with 261.03 points and becoming the fourth Japanese man to win a Grand Prix this season.

Hanyu was nearly 10 points ahead of compatriot Daisuke Takahashi, and both qualify for Sochi. Ross Miner took bronze for the United States, displacing Spain’s Javier Fernandez in a surprise result.

In the women’s event, Mao Asada won by just 0.05 points, edging out fellow Japanese skater Akiko Suzuki, while America’s Mirai Nagasu was third.

The ice dance competition was won by Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the United States, an impressive 21.86 points ahead of their nearest challengers, Russia’s Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov.

American siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani took bronze after failing to repeat their NHK win from last season.
