MOSCOW, August 8 (R-Sport) - Russian qualifier Alex Bogomolov has sprung the surprise of the day at the Canadian Open tennis tournament in Montreal, beating world No. 3 David Ferrer in straight sets.
Bogomolov, who is ranked 83rd in the world, downed Ferrer 6-2, 6-4 in their second-round encounter, making the Spaniard the highest-ranked player to fall at the tournament.
In round three, Bogomolov will meet fellow Russian Nikolai Davydenko, who beat Spain’s Pablo Andujar 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
However, there was less luck for Russian No. 1 Mikhail Youzhny, dropped 6-4, 6-4 by 11th-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic.
The Canadian Open, known as the Coupe Rogers, is an ATP 1000 tournament played on hard courts with a $2.8 million prize fund.
