ATHENS, November 19 (RIA Novosti) - A backpack saved the life of a Romanian man who tried to commit suicide by jumping off cliffs in Greece, police said on Thursday.

Police said the 30-year-old man leapt from a height of some 80 meters into the Gulf of Corinth, but his backpack got caught on the cliffs and slowed down his descent.

Coast guards rescued the luckless would-be suicide and took him to hospital.

The Gulf of Corinth separates the western mainland Greece from the Peloponnese and is one of the most important Greek tourist attractions.

Despite the Gulf's popularity among tourists, it is not in such great demand among people trying to take their own lives. San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Toronto's Bloor Street Viaduct, Japan's Aokigahara Forest and England's Beachy Head are the most popular suicide locations in the world.
