A Russian parachute jumper survived after her parachute failed to open and she fell from a height of 800 m (2,620 ft), the Life News website reported.

The parachute jumper, 19-year-old Yulia Yevdokimenko, fell into a swampy river with the depth of 0.5 m (1.6 ft) and suffered two compression fractures of the vertebrae.

Yulia, from Nefteyugansk in Western Siberia, also broke her rib and suffered many bruises. She did not even faint during the fall or after it.

"The injuries are very serious," doctor Pyotr Bastrakov said.

"The patient will have to spend at least a month on a hospital bed. But I must admit she is very lucky!" he said.

Yulia, a local champion in track and field, said: "Psychologically I was ready for an extreme landing in water or on trees, but with an open parachute!"

She faces a complicated surgery.
