Students from Moscow's top university posed in their underwear for a calendar for Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who turns 58 on Thursday.

The 12 journalism students from Moscow State University posed for the erotic 2011 calendar, adorned with the message "Vladimir Vladimirovich, We love you. Happy Birthday Mr Putin."

Each picture is accompanied by a personal message to the prime minister.

"You put out the forest fires, but I'm still burning," says Lena Gornostayeva, who posed for March.

Miss December even leaves her number for Putin to call her for a personal birthday message.

Unsurprisingly, the number has been constantly engaged all morning, so the scantily clad student was unable to comment.

The Russian government's press service could not say whether or not the prime minister had seen his unusual birthday present.

The calendar has sparked waves of criticism from other students of the university. Journalism student, Nika, wrote in her blog that she plans to create an alternative exhibition of journalism students who do not agree with their faculty being associated with such vulgar exploits.

The calendars, costing 260 rubles ($8.71) each, will be on sale in a shopping mall in southern Moscow from Wednesday.
