An Egyptian man named his newborn daughter "Facebook" in honor of the role the social network played in ousting President Hosni Mubarak, a local newspaper, Al-Ahram, reported on Monday.
Jamal Ibrahim, a man in his early twenties, named his first baby Facebook "to express his joy at the achievements made by the January 25 Youth Group," the newspaper said.
Thousands of young Egyptians used Facebook, Twitter and other social networks to organize protests, which started on January 25 and led to the resignation of President Mubarak, who ruled the Arab country for 30 years.
Facebook has 5.5 million users in Egypt, more than any other Arab country. During the first two weeks of the protests, Egyptian users created more than 32,000 new groups and 14,000 public pages on Facebook.
Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which is running the country after Mubarak's resignation, opened a Facebook page last week in a move to promote its image among the youth. The Army followed the example of the Interior Ministry, which has also opened a Facebook page to counter public accusations of corruption and non-transparency.
