Unwillingly championing equality before law, Russian Prime Minister and former President Dmitry Medvedev had four of his video uploads on Vkontakte social network banned over copyright issues on Tuesday.

Medvedev posted on his personal page five excerpts from his interview with famous Russian journalist Vladimir Pozner on state-owned Channel One, which aired late Monday.

However, for some 12 hours on Tuesday, four of five videos were banned on the copyright holder’s request. It remained unclear why the fifth video, where Medvedev touches on his political party, United Russia, was exempt from the ban.

The videos were banned by a Channel One moderator scouring the social network for copyrighted content who did not realize what he was banning, a Vkontakte spokesman told Lenta.ru news website. Medvedev obtained the videos legally from the channel, he added.

Medvedev, unlike his Kremlin successor Vladimir Putin, is an avid gadget lover and web user who also has his own personal standalone video blog, a Twitter account and a community on Livejournal.com.

Vkontakte, located at Vk.com, is Russia’s most popular social network with 36 million daily visitors, according to LiveInternet.ru. Web experts say its popularity is greatly helped by promulgation of copyrighted content, including audio and video, which is being illegally uploaded by users.
