Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, burst into life in the early hours of Sunday morning for the fifth time this year. The eruptions started about 4 am local time (0200 GMT) and lasted for an hour and half as bright orange lava was spewed into the air.
Reports say ash fell on the inhabited areas near the Sicilian volcano but that it did not cause any interruption to air traffic at the airport serving the nearby town of Catania.
