Tensions in Russian-Japanese relations
Japan will temporarily recall its ambassador to Russia in connection with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's visit to a disputed Kuril island. The visit was the first trip by a head of state of Russia or the former Soviet Union to the South Kuril Islands since the end of WWII. Japan and Russia have disputed four of the islands since 1945, preventing the countries from signing a peace agreement over the war.
