Putin says nuclear energy only alternative to oil, gas

Putin says nuclear energy only alternative to oil, gas
20:56 06/09/2010

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Monday that nuclear energy is the only alternative to traditional energy sources.

The global gas market has been recovering from the recent economic downturn, but demand for energy sources will soar over the next few years, Putin told a meeting with the Valdai International Discussion Club in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

The premier cited the current energy crisis in the United States, where, he said, "the situation with shale gas... is very difficult."

"You couldn't transfer large electric power stations to wind energy, however much you wanted to. In the next few decades, it will be impossible," Putin said, adding that consumption patterns would only undergo minor changes.

He said the only "real and powerful alternative" to oil and gas is nuclear energy. He rejected other approaches as "claptrap."

Nuclear energy is the answer to the energy declines of oil and natural gas? I don't think so unless I am missing something important here.

How can nuclear energy replace the diesel fuel that powers a truck full of produce across the world's highways. How does nuclear energy power the millions of gasoline powered cars on the world's roads?

Nuclear energy in and of itself is also a fossil fuel with a limited shelf life. Nuclear energy will be good for electricity going to homes and businesses replacing oil and natural gas. To this I agree to some extent.

However a better energy solution needs to be found and exploited. It may be a combination of wind energy, wave energy, ground based solar energy, and space based solar arrays.

But nuclear energy alone will not solve the decline in fossil fuels that will eventually spark a global economic collapse between 2015 and 2020.

It will be 2008 and 2009 all over again, only this time there will be no recovery of high gasoline and diesel fuel prices.

This information has been well documented on the internet in Peak Oil articles.

I give Putin a B+ for effort though. However the Russian Government has to do a lot more serious planning to deal with this crisis that will be both national and global in only 5 to 10 years time.

Solutions are available to side step the future collapse of world financial markets, but mankind needs to stop and re-evaluate what it values to base a country's money supply on.

Currently energy resources and rare minerals are the basis of a country's money supply. In the future the basis of a country's money supply must be its people and their ability to do work to benefit their community, city, state and country.

With this new monetary financial system in place, the demise of oil and gas energy resources will not topple the country's financial infra structure because it will be independent of cheap energy resources like oil and natural gas.

Nuclear power has been used extensively in France and Japan. Nuclear power can power electric cars. Australia has a lot of uranium right now and they are to politically correct to use it for energy. Chernobyl was an old design and a friend told me it was sexual revenge. Sabotage. All the safeties were turned off.... Why the Russian government would want people to know what happened at Chernobyl is beyond me.

A researcher at MIT recently used a 'virus to split water' into hydrogen and oxygen. Google it or see full text here.

...One main goal in the renewable energy field is to find an efficient, inexpensive way to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen could then be used as a fuel source for vehicles or fuel cells. Typically, an electric current breaks the water down. Now, there’s a new water-splitter: a virus. M.I.T.’s Angela Belcher took her cue from plants, where special pigments capture solar energy in photosynthesis, involving the splitting of water.

Belcher and her team took a harmless virus called M13. They engineered it so that one end carries a catalyst—iridium oxide. Bound at the other end are light-sensitive pigments, zinc porphyrins. The porphyrins capture light energy, and transmit it along the virus, acting as a wire, to the other end, activating the catalyst. Which splits water into oxygen and the constituents of hydrogen, a proton and electron. The work appears in the journal Nature Nanotechnology. [See http://bit.ly/aP4HCN]

The scientists are working on ways to recombine the protons and electrons back into hydrogen atoms and then molecules of H2. They’re also seeking a cheaper catalyst than iridium. But the work could light one path to the eventual production of cleaner energy...

Nuclear power will buy some time until something better comes along. New generation reactors are much safer. Thorium reactors are even safer. Thorium reactors weren't used because current nuclear reactors were used because they have 'waste' for making nuclear powered weapons.

Editor delete second post please. Telecommuting can save a lot of gas whether distance learning or most real office or industrial work. 4 10 day work weeks would save gas and increase quality time for the family. Time not in traffic in. Time that costs, rubles and gas. There is more than one way to conserve energy.

What we have as choices of energy production?Mostly, they are widely known to us.Some of them are available easily, some also but through less or more investments. Some
exist just in dreams of scientists, for now.Fosile fuels were largely exploited through decades, and there is a concern about their further abundance and availability in the future. There is also extensively speculated impact of their using on enviroment and potential climate change. So,we have oil, natural gas and charcoal as main source of energy of human civilizarion. There is also huge deposits of methane, but exploatation of it is placed in future, mostly because of difficulties in exploatation(methane occurs often in quite small quantities widely spread,or in scarcely accessible deposits). If we put hydrocarbons aside, what farther choices we have?Renewable energy sources are limited in many aspects, they need large investmens, maintenance, and they possesses limited capacity for satisfying further growing economic and technological development.I think about them as of an additional resource, adjunct for mainstream solutions, space for technology development.Exception among them is solar energy, which immense abundance cannot be omited.Efforts of humans to invent more efficacious and preferable way to utilize it,were dated affar in past. That need today is much more pronounced, because of nearly starving distress about energetic future. To utilise solar power in quantitative(through constant growing of quantities of collected solar energy)and qualitative manner(through development of technologies for exploatation so that solar energy would might be exploited in many different conditions with minimalized loss, cost and maximalized operationalization and effectivity) is inevitable task of civilization.Because solar energy is prevalent widespread, easily accessible, and that what is more important,it exceeds civilization demands for energy by such far amount, that all requirement for it would be fulfilled for very long period of time, even with constant growth of demands on energy consumption.Such moment, regardless on reasons,is pretty far from present time,so with leaving utopia,we must face complicated reality of energy production.Mister Putin was right, when he said fission is irreplaceable. Why?Earths crust contains lot of uranium and thorium, enough for production of energy for hundreds of years, even with constant growth in demands. With all risks of radioactivity and waste disposal, better choice simply doesnt appear on horizon.Problem with fact that civilization is addapted on using of fossil fuel is irrelevant, because,by itself, main energy source is primary. If main source is nuclear energy, accommodation of existing system of energy consumption would logicaly follow change.Electricity, for example, would be predominant and much more used.Directly,or through different conversions. But simply oxidation reaction of hydrocarbons slowly losts its importance.Simply, there is no enough of it.Our future will be nuclear,no matter we want it or not.Though,if we assume development of human invention, acknowledgment, capabilitiesand technology as limitless and unstoppable, and experience instructs as not to believe otherwise, possibilities of contrivance are unlimited.Solar energy, controled fusion, and even much more exotic energy sources..they are all waiting for their time to be humanized. Our mission,as human kind,no matter how much we are divided by many different points of existance,is to survive and rise toward some better future, future of better man, capable to carry the weight of that knowledge.Future will come, but just with humans on the front of it.
