U.S.-Russia Nuclear Arms Treaty Progress
A report issued by RIA Novosti, the Russian news agency, quoted Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s statement at a March 1 joint news conference with French President Nicolas Sarkozy that Russia and the United States are close to completing negotiations on a new treaty that would cut stores of strategic arms. Medvedev expressed hope that the document could be signed soon.
The United States originally backed a plan to base the missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic, but withdrew those plans in the face of Russian opposition. Since February, the Obama administration has been negotiating with officials from Romania and Bulgaria to start deploying parts of the defense shield in those nations starting in 2015. The new locations are also seen as being better suited to defend Europe against possible missile strikes from Iran.
