Mars-500 crew surviving in extreme conditions

Candidates for the Mars-500 520-day isolation training program practiced survival skills at the Pokrovskaya camp of the Russian State University of Physical Fitness near Moscow. Seven Russians, three Europeans and one Chinese person participated in the two-day training session. Experiment participants were divided into two teams and received the equipment necessary to survive in the forest, including matches, lamps, knives and hatchets. They were to put up a tent, make a bonfire for cooking and transport an injured person to a specified place.Pavel Morgunov, the spokesperson for the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, says that International Space Station crews are trained the same way. The Mars-500 candidates accomplished all tasks successfully.Six candidates will be selected from of the 11 volunteers who take part in the tests in 2010 to spend 520 days in a ground-based station.
