The Tula-based KBP Instrument Design Bureau has delivered the first consignment of the Pantsir-S anti-aircraft artillery weapon system to the Russian Air Force. This new one-of-a-kind weapon is capable of striking any and all attack aircraft in automatic mode. Pantsir-S is designed to defend military installations and primarily such anti-aircraft systems as the S-400. The developers of the Pantsir-S claim that for the first time in the history of armaments, missile launching systems and antiaircraft guns are combined in one unit.
The Pantsir-S is capable of identifying and tracking up to 20 targets and immediately engaging four of them. The system’s designers say that the equipment itself "chooses" which of the two types of weapons to use.
Pantsir-S anti-aircraft weapons systems can operate in batteries of three to five units, one of which is the “lead” unit coordinating the others. The Pantsir-S surpasses its foreign counterparts in terms of several performance characteristics: It has almost double the interception range and five times the firing rate.
