The world’s first International Humanoid Robot Olympic Games have opened in the city of Harbin in the northeast of China.

The robots, designed by gifted young people from China, South Korea, the United States and Japan are competing in track-and-field, soccer, volleyball, boxing and even in non-Olympic events, such as playing the drums and dancing.

The competition is being held on the site of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), and includes 24 events for a variety of different robots – from remotely controlled machines to fully autonomous androids.

These Olympians do not yet look like humans. They are more like toy transformers at between 20 cm to half a meter in height. It costs no more than a thousand dollars to design a robot but involves many months of painstaking work.
