Kyrgyzstan held a referendum on a new constitution and confidence in the interim government on Sunday. The republic’s 2,200 polls closed at 8 pm.
In their ballots, voters were asked a single question: whether they approved the new constitution proposed by the interim government.
The draft constitution, along with a bill putting it into effect, replace Kyrgyzstan’s current political system with a parliamentary democracy, while Roza Otunbayeva, head of the interim government, becomes the republic’s president for the transitional period until December 31, 2011.
