New rockets have been developed for the Grad multi-launch rocket system in Tula. They have a longer range, carry high explosive fragmentation and cluster charges and can parachute down on the target.

“The new ammunition has an increased range of up to 40 kilometers, or twice as far as a standard rocket,” Sergei Malevsky, a spokesman for the developer, Splav State Research and Production Association, said in a RIA Novosti interview.

According to Malevsky, these rockets have been equipped with parachutes to extend the hit radius. By dropping on the target vertically, they have no “shadow zones” and their fragments will more easily hit both personnel and equipment.

The Grad multiple rocket launcher is one of the best known Russian systems. It has been in service since 1963. Initially, it used high explosive and chemical rockets. Today the system has been adopted for use in fifty countries. It has taken part in many local conflicts and demonstrated its effectiveness and ease of maintenance
