Putin drills permafrost in Yakutia

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has visited the Russian-German research expedition Lena-2010 in Yakutia. He promised the researchers to provide funding in exchange for an exact forecast of global climate change.

Putin was not expected in Yakutia. According to schedule, he was to have gone to Norilsk in the Krasnoyarsk Territory but poor weather prevented his aircraft from landing there.

On Samoilovsky Island, scientists showed the prime minister how they do research.  Putin even took part in extracting samples of permafrost together with them.

In addition, Putin made a stop at a hydrometeorological observatory in the village of Tiksi. The observatory is equipped with up-to-date observation instruments and a lab to study data on the atmosphere, atmospheric processes, and ocean and dry land parameters.
