Moscow police disperse unauthorized rally

Police in Moscow dispersed an unauthorized rally in the city center Tuesday and detained several protesters. According to organizers, the rally was intended to uphold  article 31 of the Russian Constitution guaranteeing freedom of assembly.

Those detained include Konstantin Kosyakin, an activist with the Left Front movement, Eduard Limonov, head of the executive committee of Different Russia, and Boris Nemtsov, co-chair of Solidarity.

Kosyakin, Limonov, and Lyudmila Alexeyeva, chair of the Moscow Helsinki Group, have made repeated attempts to gather on Triumfalnaya Square in central Moscow in support of Article 31 of the Russian Constitution. They traditionally plan such rallies for the last day of months with 31 days. The Moscow municipal government has rejected all of their previous applications, yet the events go ahead as planned, only to end in clashes between protestors and police.
