In the run-up to the Chinese New Year, China has gone mad with rabbits – live, toys and candies. The Chinese are eager to buy rabbits – for themselves or for presents – whatever the price.
The Chinese think the rabbit is the luckiest of all the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac. As the New Year approaches, everyone in China tries to buy a rabbit for himself and his family – be it a live rabbit at a pet shop or a toy at a department store or on the street.
Many want a live rabbit and want to keep it throughout the year. But this can be rather costly. For example, a dwarf Dutch rabbit costs between $90 and $120 in Beijing. Still, demand remains high.
