The mysterious Inca city, Machu Picchu, is located 2,450 meters above sea level in the Andes. This is the Peruvian El Dorado, except that the mythical El Dorado was never found, while Machu Picchu is now a major tourist attraction. In the 16th century, Spanish conquistadors destroyed the great Inca Empire and captured all of its cities, but they never found the legendary city of Machu Picchu. It was U.S. archeologist Hiram Bingham who accidentally discovered the city a century ago.
