Uzbek president publishes book on events in Andizhan
TASHKENT, June 1 (RIA Novosti, Abu-Ali Niyazmatov) - Uzbek President Islam Karimov published a book on the events in Andizhan, "Uzbek People Will Never Depend on Anyone," the presidential press service said.
The book includes statements Karimov made at the press conferences on May 14 and 17 following the turmoil in Andizhan on May 13, as well as the president's interview before his state visit to China last week.
The book is "highly important for revealing the real nature of the events in Andizhan and for stopping any speculation on this issue," the press service said.
On May 13, insurgents seized a prison and a number of administrative buildings in Uzbekistan's fourth largest city Andizhan. Troops ousted the insurgents later. According to official information, 173 people were killed in the turmoil. However, journalists and human rights activists spoke about hundreds of victims.
