"The team of [Kurmanbek] Bakiyev and [former interior minister Feliks] Kulov is the most promising electoral bloc," Akayev said in a statement. "They offer the best program to solve the most pressing problems in society. It is important that support for this team should not be eroded, as its opponents want."
Akayev said that his position ignored his personal emotions and opinions, because the pair were the best suited to attain basic goals for the country's development if they won the elections.
Kyrgyzstan's main aims should be to strengthen political stability, consolidate peace, continue market reforms, develop democracy and pursue a multi-vector yet pro-Russian foreign policy, Akayev said.
He said that the country was at a crucial stage and had a unique opportunity to recover after the March revolution that ousted him.
"Now it is time to give up efforts at using pseudo-revolutionary rhetoric and fostering sentiments of revenge and other destructive ideas," he said.
The statement said that Akayev had not recently said or done anything likely to aggravate the already complex situation in the country.
Under a pre-election agreement, presidential hopeful and Ar-namys party leader Kulov removed his candidacy in favor of Bakiyev. If Bakiyev wins, Kulov will be appointed prime minister.
