Belarusian Foreign Ministry says it tried to compromise with Poland
MINSK, August 5 (RIA Novosti) - Belarus had offered Poland several ways out of the two countries' diplomatic spat, Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Mikhnevich said Friday.
"We are always ready for dialogue. We have offered Poland ways out of this contrived situation, which is in fact merely a conflict among a small group of individuals aiming to control the Union of Poles in Belarus," he said.
"To overcome this difficult stage in our relations, I believe it is necessary first and foremost to put an end to anti-Belarussian rhetoric in the media and secondly to concentrate on solving certain issues affecting our countries through consultations and meetings," he said.
These are mainly consular issues, various aspects of border cooperation, economic, ecological and cultural issues, he said.
Various Polish politicians have hinted at the possibility of declaring the Belarusian ambassador in Warsaw persona non grata.
"These kind of comments are made either in very emotional situations or without thought of consequences," Mikhnevich said
The Belarusian government deemed the recent elections in the union illegitimate. Pressure on the Union of Poles provoked a negative reaction from Warsaw and, during the last few months, both sides have expelled three diplomats. Poland called its ambassador of Belarus for consultations.
