Opinion: Israel will be forced to make further concessions
"Any further Israeli move would boil down to the pullout from territories it currently holds... Any new Israeli prime minister who will assume power at the upcoming elections will have to make concessions targeting a final settlement in the Middle East," said Eliezer Feldman, director of the Institute for Social and Political Research (ISPR).
Feldman said 21 Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip and four settlements in the West Bank had been sacrificed to revitalize the Road Map plan and that the new prime minister would probably be forced to sacrifice more to implement the first stage of the Road Map, which targets the elimination of terrorist organizations.
To meet this target, Feldman said the Palestinian Authority should have more control over the territories legally under their jurisdiction that Israel still technically controls.
Withdrawal from the Gaza Strip was meant to give Palestinians the chance to establish order in that part of the territory, Feldman said. (more)
