Former Kyrgyz prosecutor: corruption increased after revolution

BISHKEK, September 20 (RIA Novosti, Yulia Orlova) - Sacked Kyrgyz Prosecutor General Azimbek Beknazarov said Tuesday that corruption had increased in the republic after the "tulip" revolution in March.

"After March 24, corruption has only been growing and has involved senior officials," said Beknazarov who was dismissed by President Kurmanbek Bakiyev Monday.

"I had two goals - to topple the Akayev [former president] regime and to fight corruption. Akayev's regime has fallen, but I have lost the fight against corruption," Beknazarov said, adding that Akayev's supporters remained in the Kyrgyz government.

Beknazarov said his dismissal had been politically motivated and linked to the request he sent to parliament last week, demanding that Akayev's son, Aidar, be stripped of parliamentary immunity. The parliament supported the request by a majority.

Beknazarov said he would join the opposition against Bakiyev.

Bakiyev relieved Beknazarov of his authority Monday night for "grave violations of the law" and for "showing personal interest" in the investigation.

Beknazarov, a close ally of Bakiyev in the March revolution, headed the staff of the People's Unity movement that brought Bakiyev to power.
