"The terrorist attacks in recent years have highlighted the problem," Lavrov said in an address to the 33rd session of the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (Unesco) in the French capital.
During his Monday visit in Spain, Lavrov confirmed Russia's support for a Turkish-Spanish initiative to create an Alliance of Civilizations, which is designed to foster mutual respect for religious beliefs and traditions, along with stepping up cooperation between the Christian West and the Muslim East in the fight against terrorism and extremism.
Lavrov said the new alliance would rely on Unesco's experience in bringing countries with different ideologies together and coordinating the work of non-government organizations.
Lavrov also said he and Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov were scheduled to attend the fifth session of the Russian-French security cooperation council Tuesday.
