DAMASCUS, October 25 (RIA Novosti, Nadim Zuaui) - Syria has promised to cooperate with the United Nations on an investigation into the alleged assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the Syrian ambassador to the UN said at a UN Security Council session Tuesday.

Fayssal Mekdad said Syrian authorities would provide the UN panel probing Hariri's murder with any relevant information. He said they had been cooperative all along, granting UN investigators permission to interrogate Syrian witnesses on the ground.

Mekdad also mentioned President Bashar al-Assad's recent statement denying Damascus' involvement in the crime and expressing willingness to extradite any Syrian national who was proven complicit.

Tuesday's session of the UN Security Council was to discuss a report on the Hariri murder probe that was prepared by German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis and submitted to the UN Secretary General last Thursday.

Hariri and 20 others were killed in a car bomb explosion in the Lebanese capital of Beirut on February 14.
