Baku protests parliamentary elections

17:2109/11/2005

BAKU, November 9 (RIA Novosti) - A crowd of 60,000 people gathered Wednesday in Baku's Victory Square to protest Sunday's parliamentary elections. The ruling party Yeni Azerbaijan (New Azerbaijan) retained their majority in the elections, which were called into doubt by international observers.

Protesters have been displaying orange flags reminiscent of Ukraine's Orange Revolution at the end of 2004, and orange signs with messages like "we want freedom", "we are against Bush and the falsified elections" and "police, give your voice in support of freedom".

Around 500 police are present at the protests, which have so far remained peaceful.

Isa Gambar, leader of opposition party Musavat, told the crowd, "we again want to stand against the falsification at these elections and bring the authorities to account."

No party flags have been visible at the protests.
