Another 38 sentenced in Uzbekistan for Andijan uprising
TASHKENT, December 22 (RIA Novosti) - Another 38 people suspected of involvement in the Andijan uprising in Uzbekistan were sentenced to 10-18 years in jail Thursday, and one other has been confined to a psychiatric ward.
The defendants were found guilty of murder, terrorism, violating the constitution and other crimes.
On Wednesday, the Uzbek Supreme Court sentenced 41 people to 12-20 years for the uprising.
Uzbek authorities claim that the Andijan uprising on May 12-13 was masterminded by Islamic extremist groups linked to international terrorist organizations.
According to official data, 187 people died in the ensuing violence, including 60 civilians and 31 policemen. However, human rights groups say about 700 civilians died as a result of the violent crackdown by the security forces and police.
