Georgia, Turkey ease visa regime amid bird flu fears

TBILISI, February 7 (RIA Novosti) - A Georgian health official said Tuesday that simplifying the visa regime with Turkey would not increase the danger of bird flu spreading to Georgia.

"We are going to simplify the visa regime with Turkey, but it will not increase the risk of bird flu spreading from Turkey to Georgia," David Meskhishvilly said, adding that Georgian authorities had imposed tight control on the border between the two countries.

According to the Georgian Interior Ministry, about 900,000 Georgian and Turkish citizens crossed the border in both directions in 2005. The flow is expected to rise this year following the simplified visa regime, stipulating a 90-day-visa-free period, effective February 10.
