EU talks to build on Russia dialogue - Iran foreign minister

TEHRAN, February 21 (RIA Novosti) - Iran may need talks on its nuclear programs with the European Union to build on its dialogue with Russia, the Islamic Republic's foreign minister said Tuesday.

"If new official talks with the Europeans are required, Tehran will treat them as an addition to the dialogue with Russia," Manouchehr Mottaki said.

Mottaki said his country was glad to take any opportunity to exchange opinions on the nuclear dispute with different countries.

"Iran welcomes discussions [on the issue] with some EU members in the form of a dialogue," Mottaki said, without specifying whether talks between Iran and the European trio (Britain, France, and Germany), the Islamic Republic's former negotiators, would resume.

On February 20-21, Iran and Russia held two rounds of talks, discussing the latter's proposal to enrich uranium for Iranian nuclear power plants on its territory. They ended Tuesday with no specific results.

Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia's Federal Agency for Nuclear Power, said following talks that they would continue in Tehran.

"Russia is making every effort to give [Iran] an opportunity to resolve the complicated situation by peaceful and constructive means. Talks on enriching uranium on Russian territory for Iran's nuclear power [industry] will continue in Iran."

The Russian initiative would bar access to the enrichment technology for Iran, which is suspected of seeking to build nuclear weapons under the cover of peaceful energy programs.

The UN Security Council is expected to consider economic sanctions against Iran after the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN's nuclear watchdog, issues a report on the Islamic Republic on March 6.
