Iran says it uses no advanced centrifuges for uranium enrichment

Topic: Iran joins nuclear club

TEHRAN, April 23 (RIA Novosti) - Iran is not using any advanced centrifuges for uranium enrichment, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Sunday.

Advanced P-2 centrifuges can enrich uranium four times faster than the current P-1 units.

"So far, we have never used P-2 centrifuges and what we have used is P-1 machines. We have informed the agency (IAEA) about that, Hamid Reza Asefi said.

In April, Iran announced it had enriched uranium to a level used in power stations. The Islamic Republic is continuing its work on uranium enrichment, despite the international community's calls to halt it.

The United States and other Western nations accuse Iran of carrying out its nuclear program as a cover for the production of weapons but Iran insists that its program is meant for peaceful purposes.
