MOSCOW, May 3 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that violations of Lebanese air space by Israeli fighter planes could not contribute to diffusion of tensions between the two countries.

The Lebanese military reported earlier that six Israeli Air Force jets had entered the country's air space on May 1 and flown at low altitude over southern Lebanese cities.

"Such flights do not help to ease tensions and on the contrary make the situation on the Lebanese-Israeli border more fragile, providing pretexts for forces interested in maintaining the confrontation in the region," the Russian ministry said in a statement.

"We stress the need for the both sides to observe strictly the so-called UN blue line that divides Lebanon and Israel and to refrain from steps that could result in relapses of the confrontation on the border between the two countries," the ministry added.

The United Nations has about 8,000-strong peacekeeping contingent in the region to help resolve the long-standing conflict between the two countries.
