MOSCOW, May 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that a UN Security Council resolution on Sudan would facilitate a peace settlement in Darfur.

On Tuesday, the UN Security Council unanimously passed Resolution 1679 on the need to accelerate the transfer of African Union's mission in the troubled North African state under the auspices of the UN.

"Russia joined the consensus that emerged at the UN Security Council on the draft resolution," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"We believe that this resolution by the UN Security Council will provide an extra impetus to the international community's efforts to resolve the Darfur crisis," the ministry said, adding that Russia was taking specific steps to normalize the situation and secure peace in that country by sending a Russian peacekeeping contingent as part of the UN mission in the south of Sudan.

Earlier on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia would continue its proactive involvement in the UN peacekeeping operation in Sudan.
