KIEV, May 26 (RIA Novosti, Vladimir Suprun) - The mayor of the Ukrainian capital said Friday his monthly wage would from now on total 1 hryvnia ($0.2) a month until the tense situation with housing improved.

Leonid Chernovetskiy was the head of a major commercial bank before he took over the reins in Kiev in March.

"Let my salary be 1 hryvnia a month until we are able to provide at least 1,000 apartments for Kiev residents," Chernovetskiy told a Kiev City Administration board. "And then my deputies will return me everything when we reach this level."

Chernovetskiy said the city mayor's monthly wage was 24,000 hryvnias ($4,800).

He said city residents could receive a couple of apartments using his salary, adding that he did not need his money until Kiev overcame its "dreadful problems."

The newly elected mayor has adopted several extraordinary resolutions to govern the city, in particular, he organized a weekly procedure to accept complaints from residents near the administration building.
