Shanghai group parliamentary speakers set for Moscow meeting

Topic: Shanghai Cooperation Organization

09:22 30/05/2006

MOSCOW, May 30 (RIA Novosti) - Parliamentary speakers from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will gather for a debut meeting in Moscow Tuesday to address regional cooperation and international issues.

Sergei Mironov, speaker of Russia's upper chamber of parliament, the Federation Council, said that the meeting would discuss joint anti-terrorism measures, including measures to end its financing, although he said no topics had been set in stone.

"This is our first meeting and we haven't established an agenda," Mironov said.

The regional cooperation and security organization was founded in 2001. Its six permanent members are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. India, Iran, Mongolia, and Pakistan are observers, though Pakistan is expected to apply for full membership and President Pervez Musharraf has been invited to a summit of SCO leaders this summer.

President Vladimir Putin is expected to address the meeting, a Kremlin source said, adding that the Russian leader was likely to highlight cooperation between SCO legislators as a new sphere of cooperation within the organization.
