Over two months of wrangling following the March 26 elections have failed to produce the parliamentary coalition needed to form a government, which means President Viktor Yushchenko could disband the Supreme Rada if parliamentarians fail to strike a deal by June 24.
"The Party of Regions, while declaring its readiness to assume responsibility and share it with all power branches, claims that it is prepared to support a decision to dissolve the parliament and hold new earlier elections if the coalition is not formed and the parliament's leadership is not elected by the end of this week," said a source in the pro-Russian party, which won the largest share of the vote in the March elections.
He also said new polls would allow Ukrainians "elect more responsible politicians."
Representatives of pro-presidential bloc Our Ukraine, former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc, and the Socialist Party, which initially held coalition talks, said earlier Wednesday that a coalition agreement was ready to be signed.
A representative of the Socialist Party said the agreement would be signed Thursday and later registered with the parliament's secretariat.
