KIEV, July 10 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's president expressed his concern Monday over setbacks to a coalition government being formed in the country's parliament.
The "orange" coalition majority formed in the Supreme Rada collapsed last Thursday. President Viktor Yushchenko called for another coalition to be formed so that he would not have to dissolve the assembly.
Yushchenko said, "The latest developments at Ukraine's Supreme Rada have triggered a broad public reaction. Numerous messages to the Ukrainian president indicate mass discontent over parliament's inactivity and continuing political intrigues, which suggest disrespect for the Ukrainian Constitution and for the democratic principles of the nation's development."
The president said he would not accept "any confrontation scenarios that may be damaging for the nation and shatter the country's stability."
"Whatever the coalition's format, I insist categorically on the political majority obeying principles of national unity and implementing a reform program that received general popular support in Ukraine's 2004 presidential polls," he said.
Yushchenko urged parliament to form a majority coalition and have Constitutional Court judges sworn in as soon as possible.
The pro-presidential Our Ukraine party, the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and the Socialist Party established an "orange" coalition in June after three months of wrangling. But it broke up last week over the surprise election of Socialist leader Oleksandr Moroz as parliament speaker, a position originally promised to a member of Yushchenko's party.
The Socialists then left their two West-leaning allies to team up with the pro-Russian Party of Regions and the Communists. The newly formed coalition is to be registered in parliament on Tuesday, Moroz said earlier Monday.
Under the constitution, parliament will have to be dissolved if it fails to form a coalition government within 60 days after its first session. The current assembly held its first session on May 25.
