Kyrgyzstan expels two U.S. diplomats over NGO contacts

BISHKEK, July 11 (RIA Novosti) - Two U.S. diplomats have been ordered to leave Kyrgyzstan in what appears to be a dispute over contacts with nongovernmental organizations, media said Tuesday citing sources in the republic's National Security Service.

Media in the Central Asian nation said the Americans had been told to leave the country for "gross interference in the affairs of the sovereign Republic of Kyrgyzstan."

The U.S. Embassy in Kyrgyzstan said the U.S. nationals had been accused of maintaining inappropriate contacts with leaders of Kyrgyz NGOs.

The diplomatic mission expressed concern over the expulsions, saying they were entirely unwarranted and an attempt to intimidate foreign embassies and silence the country's civil society.

There has been no official reaction from the Kyrgyz government yet.
