TOKYO, July 16 (RIA Novosti) - Japan welcomes an initiative by the presidents of Russia and the United States on global protection of nuclear facilities and materials from terrorists, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said Sunday in a statement.

Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush announced the global initiative to combat nuclear terrorism after their Saturday meeting in advance of the Group of Eight summit, now underway near St. Petersburg

Through the initiative, Russia and the U.S. pledge to take joint measures to counter the threat of nuclear terrorism, including the acquisition, transport, or use of nuclear and radioactive materials by terrorists.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said the government was seeking an active role in discussions on implementing the initiative, to identify areas in which it can cooperate.
