STRELNA (near St. Petersburg), July 17 (RIA Novosti) - French President Jacques Chirac said armed units in Lebanon should be disarmed.
"A situation when armed units control Lebanese territory is absolutely unacceptable," Chirac told a news conference. "These units have to be disarmed."
The French president also proposed establishing mechanisms to control Lebanese borders in the wake of the escalating Mideast crisis.
"The UN Security Council should determine the terms of this mechanism's operation," he said.
The situation in the Middle East escalated after the Hizbollah Islamist group attacked Israeli facilities and took Israeli servicemen hostage. In response, Israel deployed troops to Lebanon and launched devastating air strikes on the country.
