AUGUST 1, (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's president is holding consultations on the dissolution of the country's parliament, the Supreme Rada, the presidential press service said Tuesday.

President Viktor Yushchenko received the right to dissolve parliament after the assembly missed a 60-day deadline for forming a new government.

The press service said the president was committed to finding a compromise and reaching mutual understanding, and that he regarded his "right to dissolve parliament as a last resort."

"Yushchenko is conducting consultations under the provisions of Article 90 of the Constitution on the dissolution of the Supreme Rada with the heads of parliamentary factions, the parliament speaker and his deputies," the statement said.

The parliamentary majority led by the pro-Russian Party of Regions said Monday that a move to dissolve parliament would be illegal, and that it would impeach the president if he failed to nominate the party leader for the post of prime minister.

Earlier on Tuesday, Yushchenko met with Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of an eponymous pro-Western bloc, and Roman Bessmertny, leader of the pro-presidential Our Ukraine bloc. He is due to meet with his "orange" revolution rival Viktor Yanukovych, who heads the pro-Russian Party of Regions.

"During the meetings with Tymoshenko and Bessmertny, the parliamentary crisis and possible solutions were discussed, as was the dissolution of the Supreme Rada, should it prove impossible to end the current standoff by parliamentary methods," the presidential service said.
