MOSCOW, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - Nitroglycerin could have been the liquid carried onto aircraft bound from the U.K. in a terrorist plot to blow them up in mid-flight August 10, Moscow's chief explosives expert said Tuesday.
London police reported last Thursday that a terrorist conspiracy involving up to 21 people had been foiled. They said the suspects had planned to bring explosives on board in hand luggage and to set them off on flights to the United States.
"In terms of power, nitroglycerin can be compared to RDX, and 1-1.5kg of it is enough to carry out a terrorist attack on board a plane," Adolf Mishiyev told a news conference.
Mishiyev said five types of nitroglycerin were most common, and that they were capable of exploding from the slightest shock.
He said that there are many other types of liquid explosives, which meant that international terrorism had reached a new level in terms of training.
