KIEV, August 16 (RIA Novosti) - Two Ukrainian sailors abducted in Nigeria have been released after spending almost a week in captivity, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

Last Wednesday, unidentified assailants kidnapped four crewmen, two Ukrainians and two Norwegians, from a Norwegian ship servicing oil platforms in Nigerian territorial waters. The abductors were apparently trying to seize an oil platform on the local shelf.

"Two Ukrainian citizens, who were kidnapped on August 9 in Nigerian territorial waters, were released on August 15," the ministry's spokesperson said.

"The hostages are in good health," he said, adding that they would be transferred to Lagos, Nigeria's biggest city, for further medical examination.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Nigeria is preparing the return of the hostages to the country, the spokesperson said.

The fate of the Norwegian hostages remains unknown.
