ATHENS, September 4 (RIA Novosti) - The leaders of Russia, Bulgaria and Greece signed a joint declaration on energy cooperation in Athens Monday.

"The declaration adopted today outlined the current tasks in the energy field," Vladimir Putin said.

"I am convinced this field may become a driving force in Russian-Greek-Bulgarian short-term and long-term cooperation," he said.

The declaration said the sides assign priority to the creation of new gas transportation systems, and will consider new projects in this field.

Putin also said Russia considers Bulgaria and Greece "reliable partners."

"We regard reliable energy access as a condition of the dynamic and stable development of civilization. This may be achieved only if the interests of all members of the energy chain, energy producers, transit countries and consumers, are taken into account" Putin said.

Putin is currently in Athens, where he arrived to meet with leaders of Greece and Bulgaria to discuss economic relations, and in particular, an ambitious oil pipeline project.

The Russian, Bulgarian and Greek governments signed a memorandum on the construction of a pipeline stretching 280 kilometers (175 miles) from the Bulgarian port of Burgas, on the Black Sea, to Greece's Alexandroupolis on the Aegean in April 2005.

Under the declaration adopted Monday, the sides agree to speed up the creation of an international project team, and to sign an intergovernmental agreement to support the pipeline project by year's end.
